9 Ways to Travel Smarter

You’ve waited long enough for this moment, and your trip is finally here! You may feel a mixture of excitement, nerves, anticipation, hopefulness and everything in between. You’re giving yourself one of the richest gifts in the world: Travel.

Here are our tips to help you have an amazing trip:

1. Travel is a state of mind.

We think the old saying, “You get out what you put in,” was written about travel. A great trip is not something that happens to you, but rather something you make happen for yourself. Make it happen by planning your free time and having an open mind. Carpe diem.

2. We got you, babe.

Part of the benefit of booking a trip with us is that we have your back. Whether you have questions before you go, your flight is delayed or something unforeseen happens, you can count on us to support you. We’ve been in the business for over 50 years and have international offices in more than 54 countries. It’s safe to say, if you need us, we’re here for you. Now, excuse us while we dust our shoulders off.

3. To Infinity and Beyond: Go outside of your comfort zone.

This applies not only to trying new things, but also to being more extroverted than normal. You’re joining a trip with other travelers just like you. Everyone is a little nervous, but you’re all coming together based on your desire to see the world. That’s a pretty beautiful thing, if you ask us. Go out of your way to be friendly, even if you’re typically a little shy. You’ll thank us when, at your Farewell Dinner, you’re bidding a tearful adieu to your new best friends.

4. Make friends around the world.

Being extroverted goes beyond your trip crew. Go out of your way to chat up a local! Sure, language barriers are a thing, but that’s part of the fun. Test your hand at speaking the native tongue (don’t worry about butchering it) and get to know them on a deeper level. Not only will you gain invaluable perspective on real life in your given destination, but you’ll also get the most authentic tips and recommendations. Be super nice to every person you meet, from your server at a cafe to other patrons at the bar. Remember, you’re on their turf.

5. Riddle me this, Batman.

Check your pride at the door and embrace humility. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You’re in a new, far away land; odds are you don’t know everything. Instead of getting horribly lost or ordering something funky off the menu, just ask. You’ll have more direction on the decision and learn something in the process.

6. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Spoiler alert: STUFF GOES WRONG WHILE TRAVELING! Just like in your everyday life, sometimes the universe has a different plan in store for you. Take a deep breath and handle the situation in stride. Travel heightens your creative thinking skills, and those who are able to roll with the punches find the silver lining quicker than their Debbie Downer counterparts. Who knows? A mishap might turn into an opportunity for adventure.

7. The times, they are a-changin’.

Some travel to experience the sites we’ve read about in our history books, many of which have been tactfully preserved for our enjoyment; however, it’s the 21st century everywhere. This means that many quaint, romanticized destinations we’re seeking are mixed with some hodge-podge from modern day—and it’s not always pretty. The world can be crowded, sometimes sketchy, urban and lacking in the wonder we envision from afar, but that’s OK! To quote Rick Steves, “Today’s problems will fill tomorrow’s museums.” Embrace today, as it will indefinitely inform tomorrow.

8. Your Travel Superhero.

When you arrive, you’ll be met by your Tour Director, the person who not only handles the logistics of your trip but is also your Travel Superhero. If a situation arises where you need help, don’t hesitate to ask them for advice or assistance. While your travel buddies are great friends, challenge yourself to be your best self. Keep your TD in the loop if any drama is impacting your experience. They’re your best resource to make your trip amazing.

9. This is YOUR trip.

Our last piece of advice is to own it; this is your trip. To whatever motivation and means brought you to this juncture, we applaud you. Now, grab the bull by the horns and make this the best damn trip of your life! You never know when an opportunity such as this will happen again, so why not live it up? Trust us, you won’t regret it.
