World’s biggest New Year’s in Berlin

This is prime time for signing up for New Year’s trips with EF College Break (they have extended hours this week to handle the rush). During this frenzy I’ve learned something I never knew about: of all the cities in the world, New Year’s in Berlin is particularly huge.

From TV I know about Times Square in New York. And from personal experience I know about the amazing craziness that is New Year’s in Prague. But I did not know that Berlin in particular has such a monumental New Year’s thing. They say it’s the biggest open-air party in the world, bigger than New York’s or London’s celebrations.

The Berlin party takes place between Brandenburg Gate and Siegessäule (a.k.a. Berlin Victory Column). They call this stretch Party Mile. Every New Year’s, more than a million people gather here to party. A million people. That’s incredible.

They have show stages, video screens, a media center, party tents, all kinds of food and refreshments, laser and light shows, DJs, and of course, an amazing midnight fireworks show when the clock has struck 2013.

As I’ve written before in this blog, the New Year’s I spent in Prague is easily the most memorable of my life. Something tells me if I ever made it to Berlin, that Prague New Year’s might be dethroned.
